How To Get Paint Off Hardwood Floors

A lick of paint can revive your home and gives your walls and furniture a brand-new look. But what if you accidentally get a few drops of paint on your beautiful hardwood floors? Don’t panic! Removing paint from hardwood floors is easier than you think with the right tools and techniques. We’ve listed a few easy steps to remove that paint from your hardwood floors without damaging them.

Products and Tools:

Before we dive into the steps, let’s take a look at the products and tools you will need to get the job done:

• Gloves
• Paper towels
• Mineral spirits
• Soft cloths
• Fine steel wool or sandpaper

Step 1: Wipe off the wet paint

If the paint is still wet, use some paper towels to wipe off the paint. Be careful not to smear it over the surface of your hardwood floor while you do this. 

Step 2: Test the paint

First you have to know if the paint is water-based or oil-based. In case the paint has dried, test it with cotton swabs, one dipped in warm water and another one in mineral spirits. If the paint comes off with the warm water cotton swab this indicates that the paint is water-based and you can proceed to step three. When the one with the mineral spirits removes the paint it is likely oil-based and you can move on to step four.

Step 3: Remove the water-based paint

Take a soft cloth and moist it in warm water. Wring it out until it’s just damp. You want to avoid excessive water on your hardwood floors. Wipe away any paint residue until all traces have been removed from your hardwood floors. Make sure to dry the floors as quickly as you can after you’ve removed the paint to minimize potential water damage.

Step 4: Remove the oil-based paint

Apply mineral spirits to a soft cloth and rub it gently onto the remaining paint. This will soften the paint and make it easier to remove. Be sure to test it on a small, inconspicuous area first to avoid any damage.

When working with mineral spirits, put on your safety goggles and gloves and lay down a drop cloth to protect the surrounding area. This will prevent any damage to your furniture or other surfaces in case of accidental spills.. Open a window to let fresh air circulate.  

Wiping in one direction will help to ensure that you don’t cause scratches on your floor during this process. Once the paint has been removed, damp a soft cloth with hot water and wipe away any mineral spirits residue. Dry the area afterwards.

Step 5: Use Fine Steel Wool and Sandpaper

If some paint drops are still stubbornly adhered to your floor, you wanna try using fine steel wool or sandpaper. Sand the remaining bits of paint with a light hand in order to remove them. Be sure not to apply too much pressure as this could potentially damage the finish on your hardwood floor. Once all the paint is removed, use a damp cloth to wipe away any (dust) particles that may have been left behind from the process.
