There are few things that can be as annoying as a squeaky door. Opening or closing it reminds you every time it needs fixing and just forget about silently sneaking away at night to go to the bathroom or have a snack. Luckily we have you covered. In our step-by-step guide we explain how you can fix those squeaky doors without breaking a sweat.

How to Fix a Squeaky Door

Product and Tools You Need:

Step 1: Determine the Cause of the Squeak

Before you start repairing the door hinges, you should first determine whether or not the hinges are the cause of the squeak. In some cases, the squeaky noise comes from a loose door handle or latch. Another reason could be the misalignment of the door, which will cause it to scrape against the still or jamb. To identify the cause of the squeak, open and close the door several times while paying attention to where the noise is coming from.

Step 2: Tighten any Loose Screws

If the hinges are loose, the door may also be misaligned, which can cause it to squeak. Use a screwdriver to tighten any loose screws on the hinges. Be sure not to overtighten the screws, as this can strip the threads and cause further problems.

Step 3: Lubricate the Hinges

Once you have identified the hinges as the source of the squeak, it is time to lubricate them. Start by removing any dirt or debris from the hinges with a toothbrush or small brush. Next, spray a lubricant, such as WD-40, on the hinges. Be sure to get the lubricant into all the crevices and corners of the hinges. To make it easier you can attach a straw applicator to the nozzle so you can better aim the lubricant and have less overspray. Let it sit for a couple of minutes. Wipe off any excess lubricant with a rag or paper towel.

Test the door again. If the squeaky noise persists, move on to the next step.

Step 4: Remove the Hinge Pins

To remove the hinge pins you simply need a hammer and a nail or chisel. Put the nail or chisel at the bottom of the hinge pin at an angle. Gently tap the chisel or nail with the hammer until the hinge pin comes out. If the hinge pin isn’t cooperating, spray some additional silicon-based lubrication spray to help it come loose.

Only remove one hinge pin at a time. If you take all the pins out, you risk damaging the hinges, frames and door.

Step 5: Clean the Hinge Pins

Once the hinge pin is out, check it for rust and dirt. Use steel wool to clean it. Stubborn rust and dirt might need some household cleaner. Rub it in and let it soak for a couple of minutes. Rub it again with the steel wool until the hinge pin is “squeaky clean”. Pun intended.

Step 6: Coat the Hinge Pins in White Lithium Grease

When the hinge pin is clean, coat it with a layer of white lithium grease. This will help protect the metal and prevent future rusting. It also lubricates which will further reduce friction, which causes the squeaky noise.

Step 7: Reinstall the Hinge Pins

After you coated the hinge pin with the white lithium grease, put it back in place. Repeat the process from step 3-7 for each hinge pin. Remember to do one hinge pin at a time to avoid damaging the hinges and frame.

Step 8: Test the door

Wipe the excess grease and test the door. If done correctly, the squeaky door noise is gone.

Great job!
